David Wilder's path to professional audio engineering wasn't straightforward. After a car accident prevented him from pursuing music due to medical complications, he was looking for a way to rekindle his passion. That's when Sound Academy came into the picture.
"It appeared in an Instagram post," David recalls. "I looked at the program and saw that it was a French school that had just opened a branch in New York. I got a call from Dante, who gave me all the information. After two months of consideration, I decided to enroll."
David's experience at Sound Academy was transformative. The learning environment, guided by expert instructors, fostered collaboration and personal growth. "On the first day, we didn't know each other, but Lucho had us introduce ourselves. Eventually, we started sharing our music and respecting each other's sound. Lucho encouraged us to start recording, and before we knew it, we were making music together."
One of the most memorable aspects of the program was the hands-on experience with professional audio equipment. “It’s not every day you get access to a studio equipped with hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of gear, and that someone lets you handle everything to learn how to use it. Being able to record live music and work with hardware was incredible. When you’re used to working only on a laptop, it can be intimidating.”
David attributes much of his success to the guidance of Dante and Finn throughout his journey. “Dante and Finn are a blessing. They really helped me through the whole process.”
Today, David is putting his skills into practice by looking for a studio in New York where he can intern and learn from experienced engineers and producers.
“I really appreciate the opportunity Sound Academy has given us. Most studios only take five to ten interns at a time. Every two months, six to eight people get the chance to work at Quad Studios, and that’s a unique opportunity.”
Currently, David is finalizing a project with a gospel artist and preparing to release an EP with Tyree and Anthony, recorded at Quad Studios during the program. His time at Sound Academy has opened doors to exciting collaborations and future opportunities. Thanks to Sound Academy, David Wilder has gained the knowledge, experience, and network necessary to elevate his music career.
His story is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and hands-on training in the field of audio engineering. David also wants to help Sound Academy build a community of artists in New York City and remain involved with the program.
