Alumni Spotlight: Matthew Ingram – From Stage to Studio: A journey from live production to studio mastery

Before joining Sound Academy, Matthew Ingram was no stranger to managing large-scale projects. Owner of a design studio with operations in three countries, he had acquired extensive experience in managing complex workflows and delivering high-quality results. Yet, his passion for music production remained untapped.

“I wanted to learn how to work in a studio to see if I could transfer my skills to a field that I am more passionate about.”

Although he has a lot of experience in live pre-production, he wanted to take on a new challenge by joining a structured studio environment.

The Sound Academy Experience

At Sound Academy, Matthew found much more than just technical training—he discovered a welcoming and inclusive community.

“Everyone was super friendly, and there were people of all ages. It was a very inclusive environment, with people of all backgrounds, religions, and orientations. A safe space where we supported each other. I looked forward to seeing my classmates at each session.”

"It was much better than watching videos on the internet. The experience was much more structured and allowed me to progress much faster."

An apprenticeship with industry professionals

Beyond the technical aspects, Matthew especially remembers the interaction with the instructors from Snap! Records and the valuable lessons learned from their experience in the field.

Advice for future students

One of the most significant lessons for Matthew was the importance of taking action in music production.

"You can't improve at music you don't create. You have to stop reading and theorizing, and start producing. Being surrounded by people motivated by music pushes you to progress."

So, what's next for Matthew?

With his new skills and network, Matthew is now focusing on collaborating with other artists and developing his portfolio.

“My goal is to work with other artists to expand my portfolio. I also plan to take further training, as I loved this learning experience.”

With his new expertise, contacts, and increased confidence, Matthew is ready to take the next step in his passion for music production. His journey illustrates the power of structured learning, hands-on experience, and a strong creative community.
