Matthew James, known as Mattics, has always been passionate about audio engineering and music production. However, when the studio where he produced suddenly closed, he found himself searching for the next step in his career. That's when a friend told him about Sound Academy, pointing him toward a professional growth opportunity.
"Before Sound Academy, I was producing at a studio that closed due to some issues. I heard about Sound Academy from a friend and immediately signed up. We really wanted to learn the craft we're in, not just plug in an aux cable and call ourselves producers."
Mattics quickly realized that Sound Academy aligned with his goals and provided the structured environment he needed. By immersing himself in the program, he forged strong bonds with his fellow students, fostering a creative and collaborative atmosphere.
Mattics describes the course environment as welcoming and comfortable, allowing him to instantly connect with his classmates.
"We clicked right away. We came up with the idea of creating a Sound Academy mixtape with five tracks that we demoed with Lucho. Then, David and I practically composed a song using his beat."
This sense of community became a driving force in his artistic development, proving that networking and collaboration are just as important as technical skills.
One of the most impactful aspects of the program for Mattics was the mentorship provided by experienced instructors. He particularly appreciated Lucho's teaching, whose pedagogy made complex concepts easy to grasp.
"I love Lucho, honestly. He makes things really easy to understand. He answered all my questions without making me feel embarrassed. We learned everything we needed to know thanks to him."
Receiving instruction directly from a working professional gave Mattics the confidence and expertise needed to hone his production skills and take them to the next level.
The program wasn't without its challenges, particularly regarding mastering studio equipment. For Matthew, the Patch Bay was one of the biggest hurdles. "The Patch Bay was the biggest challenge, understanding how it works. The analog equipment too, because I'd never used it before."
Unlike digital setups, where most productions are done on a laptop, Sound Academy offers hands-on experience with professional equipment, giving students a competitive edge in the industry.
"First of all, yes! I don't want to sound cliché, but you're going to learn a tremendous amount. Be prepared to sacrifice a few Saturdays, but above all, get ready to learn much more than you thought you knew. The experience is well worth the investment."
Today, Mattics is leveraging his expertise in an ambitious new project: opening his own recording studio with his colleagues.
"I'm opening a studio and I'll be part of the rotating sound engineer team. It's called Set the Tone, located in Williamsburg. We're getting the keys at the end of the month." With his new role as a sound engineer, Mattics is poised to make his mark on the music industry, providing artists with a space for creation and innovation.
Sound Academy enabled him to turn his passion into a career, proving that investing in professional training can be life-changing. His journey is an inspiration to anyone who dreams of a career in audio engineering and music production.
